Original 1950s PVC Oilskin Coat by 'George Angus'

SOLD

Code: 54601

An original British oilskin PVC coat as used throughout the first half of the 20th century for a variety of working roles.

This style of coat was popular with fishermen and dockers amongst others who had to work outside in wet and windy conditions. The Royal Navy also used these as did the Merchant Navy. This example belonged to a man who served in the Merchant Navy as an officer during the 1940s and 1950s.

This coat is typical of those made in the mid Century period. It is made from a black coloured PVC oilskin material which was ideally suited to wet conditions as it is highly waterproof. It features a short collar which is made from a contrasting white coloured PVC, two patch pockets to the front and full button front fastening. Being a workwear piece of utilitarian design it features a straight sleeve with no cuff and has no rear vent.

Inside the coat the original label is present and bears the name of 'Angus Nonstick' along with the maker's name of 'George Angus & Co Ltd'. Towards the bottom of the back panel there is some stenciling to the inside which may offer scope for further research.

The coat is designed to be worn as an outer layer and is therefore cut in a generous, wide manner.  It will suit someone of around a 40" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 24"
Inside arm - 19 1/2"
Outside arm - 25"
Shoulders - 19"
Length - 34 1/2"

The coat is in good condition with some signs of wear and age. Overall it displays well and looks to be very wearable but please take time to study them and bear in mind that this is a pre-worn work coat which may have other small issues commensurate with age.

A good original Merchant Navy PVC oilskin coat!
