Original WW2 US Navy M69 Transport Coat

SOLD

Code: 54539

An original United States Navy M69 Transport Coat dating from the Second World War.

This pattern of coat was produced for airmen serving with the US Navy flying in open cockpit aircraft and on long patrols over the atlantic etc. They are a very high quality item and extremely well made. Designed for warmth, the coat is made from a dark brown goatskin leather (the same as was used for M422A jackets and similar during this period) and features a thick alpaca lining and large mouton collar. It features a double breasted front and storm flap to the right shoulder which is a typical period detail. The coat also has a matching leather waist belt with metal single prong buckle.

Inside the coat there is a hanging loop at the neck and an interior pocket which is lined with white cotton and fastens with a press snap. This is the same design seen on other USN flying jackets from this period.

The coat will suit around a 36" - 38" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 21"
Inside arm - 17"
Outside arm - 24 1/4"
Shoulders - 18 1/2"
Length - 42"

The coat is in good condition with some signs of age and wear. There are areas of crazing to the leather exterior and some parts of the chrome finish is missing as illustrated in the pictures. This is most evident to the sleeves where there is some flaking etc. The alpaca lining is good and mostly complete with some missing areas which can be seen in the pictures. The mouton collar is also good on the whole and displays well with some areas of missing fur which are not all noticeable when the coat is worn or displayed. The waist belt is good although the eyelet that the single prong passes through has partly pulled away from the leather but still functions. The interior pocket press stud does not function.

A good original example with plenty of signs of wear and age which still displays well. These are seriously well designed and quality coats which are now very sought-after.
