Scarce Original WW2 British Army Officer's Raincoat by 'Simpson'

SOLD

Code: 54330

A fantastic and very rare original British Army officer's macintosh raincoat dating from the 1940s and in good condition.

This style of raincoat was first worn by officers of the British Army during the Great War. They became popular with civilians in the inter-war period and are now an iconic piece of clothing which is instantly recognisable. This example was made during the Second World War specifically for the military, as is stated on the label although many of the design features are true to the classic British raincoat.

The coat is made from a khaki coloured proofed cotton which was chosen for its waterproof nature. It features a double breast front which fastens with plastic buttons and there is a storm flap detail across the shoulders. Slash pockets are located to the front which lead through into large patch pockets inside the coat. Epaulettes are fitted to each shoulder and belts are present to each cuff which can be fastened with a small leather covered buckle. The original waist belt is still present and also features a leather covered buckle which features a single prong.

Inside the coat features another layer of the same proofed cotton and features a press stud detail to the bottom vent which is illustrated in picture 9. There are also leg straps inside the coat and the original throat latch is also still present. There is a hanging loop at the neck and a small interior pocket.

The original label is present below the hanging loop and bears the Simpson two coloured logo used during WW2. It also features the words 'Padak Weatherproof' below which is another label which reads 'For officer's only' and denotes this as a private purchase military item, rather than a civilian coat.

The coat will suit around a 36" - 38" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 22 1/2"
Inside arm - 18"
Outside arm - 23"
Shoulders - 18"
Length - 44"

The coat is in good condition with no serious flaws or damage. There are plenty of signs of wear and use but nothing undue and the coat is still very wearable. There is some soiling to the khaki coloured fabric and, as is usually the case with these proofed coats, there is a slight aroma. Overall it displays very well but is a vintage item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A stunning example of a rare and hard to find coat with a brilliant label.
