Rare WW2 RAF Air Commodore's Greatcoat

SOLD

Code: 54322

An original Royal Air Force Air Commodore's Greatcoat dating from the Second World War.

This style of greatcoat was worn by officers in the RAF from before the Second World War but was replaced immediately after with a new pattern, making this particular style the only acceptable pattern for a WW2 collector.

This example is a very high quality coat which has been beautifully made. All RAF officer's coats are quality items, but this example has a few details not usually encountered which reflect the rank. The coat is made from a heavy RAF blue crombie cloth and features a full waist belt with brass buckle which is a high quality 'Jifix' example. Brass King's crown RAF buttons are fitted throughout and the cuff is functional which is another indication of the high quality of this coat. Most coats found today will not have this feature. The coat is fitted with original shoulder boards to the shoulders which bear the rank of Air Commodore and are almost certainly original to the coat as they match the high quality of the piece.

The interior of the coat features a partial lining, a hanging loop at the neck and no interior pockets. There are no labels anywhere in the coat although it is possible that someone of this rank didn't need a label as it was usually obvious which coat was his.

The coat will suit someone of around a 38" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat measures -

Chest - 22 1/2"
Inside arm - 18 1/2"
Outside arm - 26"
Length - 46 1/2"
Shoulders - 18"

The condition of the coat is good for its age. It displays well and looks good when worn but does have some minor discolouration around the edge of the collar and the roll of the lapel which is to be expected from an original piece of uniform that has been worn.  The interior also shows signs of use but overall the coat is a good example with no serious flaws or damage.

A very hard to find air rank greatcoat which would have been a very expensive coat to buy at the time!
