Original 1954 Dated Burton Harris Tweed Sports Jacket - Size 40

SOLD

Code: 54055

An original men's tweed three button jacket made from Harris Tweed by Burton in 1954.

This style of jacket was highly popular in the UK during the 1940s and 1950s and would have been worn as a casual jacket with trousers such as grey flannels. Cut in a typically British manner, the jacket features a three button single breasted front fastening and a notched collar which has a pronounced shape, typical of the era. Flapped pockets are located to the skirt whilst a single angled welt pocket can be found to the left breast. There are no rear vents as was popular during the 1940s meaning that this jacket could easily pass as being made in the previous decade. The jacket is made from a classic tweed which has flecks of different shades. The interior of the jacket is fully lined with a golden-grey coloured rayon material and there is a single interior pocket.

Below the interior pocket are the original labels which are still bright and legible. The first is the classic 'Montague Burton' label used throughout the 1940s and the lower label is a bevo embroidered Harris Tweed label, which is again typical of the period. Inside the pocket is a paper label as is often found in jackets made by Burton. It has the date of 2 12 54 printed in red which dates the jacket.

The jacket will suit around a 40" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 22"
Inside arm 18"
Outside arm - 25"
Shoulders - 17 1/2"
Length - 29"

The jacket is in well worn condition as can be seen in the pictures. Like many casual jackets from the period, it shows signs of use and staining commensurate with heavy country wear. Please take time to study these before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-owned item.

A classic British sports jacket which could easily pass as a 1940s example.
