Original WW2 RAF C Type Flying Helmet - Size 4

SOLD

Code: 54044

An original Royal Air Force C Type Flying Helmet dating from the Second World War and in a size 4 - The largest size produced.

This pattern of helmet is sometimes referred to as the 'Second Pattern' C Type or, possibly more accurately, the first pattern internally wired C Type. This pattern was introduced in March 1944 replacing the earlier externally wired version and saw use throughout the rest of the conflict. The rear of the helmet features three straps which confirms this as a wartime helmet - The 5 strap version replaced this before the end of the war.

The exterior of the helmet is made from a brown coloured leather and is fitted with metal press studs throughout. The goggle straps all retain their snaps which have a good amount of their brown painted finish to the exterior. The grey elastic chin strap is present as are the receiver cups appear to be good and are fitted with Type 32 receivers which were introduced in the mid-war period. These are connected to an original internal wiring loom which is the correct WW2 pattern, as is the large bell shaped plug fitted to the end of the loom. Still visible on the outside of the helmet is the stores code of 22C/880 which denotes the helmet as being a size 4.

The interior of the helmet is lined with chamois leather which shows signs of wear and use with soiling commensurate with service wear. The size is marked in black in ink as 4 and the original owner has added his name and serial number which may offer the prospect of further research.

Overall the helmet displays well enough although the chromed leather finish to the exterior is missing in numerous areas. One of the receiver cups is also not the best but these flaws have been illustrated in the pictures and reflected in the price. Please study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item with some flaws commensurate with age.

A hard to find large size 4 helmet which is of wartime origin.
