Original 1940s CC41 Herringbone Tweed Overcoat by 'Burton' - Size 38

SOLD

Code: 53856

A stunning original 1940s men's overcoat made by Montague Burton under the CC41 utility clothing scheme.

The CC41 utility scheme which was brought into effect in the UK in 1941 as part of the larger rationing scheme. The idea behind it was that affordable, quality clothing would be available to everyone of every class and could be bought using coupons. The label is now deemed to be highly desirable by many collectors due to its wartime history.

The coat is made from a striking herringbone striped wool that has a slubby weave which gives it a flecked appearance. The silhouette is typical of the 1940s featuring a double breasted front with wide button stance, large patch pockets to the front and a waist belt which is made from matching material. The waist belt is made from the same material and features a leather covered metal buckle which is typical of the era. All the buttons are a tortoiseshell colour which contrast nicely against the colour of the coat and give it a classic 1940s feel.

The interior of the coat features a full lining of grey coloured rayon and a single interior pocket. Above this is the Montague Burton label often encountered on 1940s menswear. The CC41 utility label is also present to the lining and there is a large paper label inside the interior pocket which features both the CC41and Montague Burton logos. It also states the chest size as 38.

The coat is designed to fit a 38" chest but due to being cut in a loose, over-size manner and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 22 1/2"
Inside arm - 16 1/2"
Outside arm - 25 1/4"
Shoulders - 19"
Length - 47"

The coat is in excellent condition as can be seen in the pictures. There is a small flaw to the right hand sleeve which is illustrated in pictures 6 but is hard to notice due to the busy pattern of the coat. There is also some slight discolouration to the rear of the colour although this is only noticeable under close scrutiny. It is a vintage, pre-owned item which has been worn so please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.

A fantastic original tweed overcoat in a striking striped fabric!
