Original 1940s CC41 Herringbone Stripe Overcoat by 'Burton' - Size 38

A stunning original 1940s men's overcoat made by Montague Burton under the CC41 utility clothing scheme. 

The CC41 utility scheme which was brought into effect in the UK in 1941 as part of the larger rationing scheme. The idea behind it was that affordable, quality clothing would be available to everyone of every class and could be bought using coupons. The label is now deemed to be highly desirable by many collectors due to its wartime history. 

The coat is made from a striking herringbone striped wool that has a slubby weave which gives it a flecked appearance. The silhouette is typical of the 1940s featuring a double breasted front with wide button stance, large patch pockets to the front and a waist belt which is made from matching material. The waist belt has a high quality buckle system which is maker marked 'Jifix' and traps the belt tightly when fastened. All the buttons are a butterscotch colour which contrast nicely against the colour of the coat and give it a very 1940s feel.

The interior of the coat features a full lining of grey coloured rayon and a single interior pocket. Below this is the Montague Burton label often encountered on 1940s menswear. The CC41 utility label has been removed from the lining but there is clear evidence of where it was originally fitted as illustrated in picture 12.

The coat is designed to fit a taller 38" chest but and when laid flat it measures - 

Chest - 22"
Inside arm - 17 1/2"
Outside arm - 27"
Shoulders - 18 1/2"
Length - 47 1/2"

The coat is in excellent condition as can be seen in the pictures. There is a hole to the main fabric at the left hand bottom front which is illustrated in the pictures (1, 6 and 7) but is hard to notice due to the busy pattern of the coat. It is a vintage, pre-owned item which has been worn so please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.
