Original 1940 Dated RAF Ordinary Airman's Tunic - Size 16

SOLD

Code: 53809

A scarce early example of the RAF Ordinary Airman's tunic clearly dated 1940.

This pattern of tunic was introduced into service with the RAF in the 1930s and saw issue throughout the Second World War. Whilst not stated on the label, this is a 'simplified' example which was introduced in 1940, replacing the earlier pattern with French cuff.

The tunic is made from the standard RAF blue coloured wool serge and features a full set of Kings crown brass buttons. The original belt is still present as is the brass belt buckle. No insignia is currently fitted to the tunic but this could easily be sourced.

Inside the tunic the original label is still present. It bears the size of 16 which is designed to fit a 38" chest and a height of 6' 2". The 1940 contract number is present as is the 1940 date. There is also an Anti Vesicant, or AV stamp, dating from February 1942. This can be seen in the attached pictures as a white ink stamp, similar to those used for War Department acceptance stamps.

The condition of the tunic is excellent as can be seen in the pictures. It shows limited signs of use, wear or washing. It is still the deep blue colour it would have been when new rather than a washed out grey colour of a well worn example. The eagle shoulder badges have been removed and there is a small slit to the right sleeve where it was damaged in the process. This will be covered when new badges are added. There are also a few small moth nips which are illustrated in the pictures. It is a vintage item however so may have small issues commensurate with age.

All in all a nice, rare early tunic in good condition. A must have for the early war collector!
