Original Victorian Double Breasted Waistcoat - Size 42"

SOLD

Code: 53769

An original double breasted men's waistcoat in black which dates from the late Victorian period.

This style of waistcoat was very popular with men in the late Victorian era and through into the Edwardian era. Whilst now the idea of a double breasted vest seems far removed from modern fashion, it was quite commonplace at the time and certainly carries an air of style and dash.

This particular example is constructed in a most typical way for the period. It features frog mouth lapels, covered buttons and a brass buckle to the rear which is marked 'Paris' - All of which are typical features of the period. The backing material and lining material are again of the kind usually encountered on clothing from this period.

The waistcoat will suit around a 42" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 21 1/2"
Length at back - 18 1/2"

The waistcoat is in reasonable condition considering it is over 100 years old but it does show some signs of age and wear. The backing is particularly worn but the condition is reflected in the price. Please study the pictures as these form part of the description and keep in mind the age of the garment!

The rear panel has also been enlarged with the addition of a wedge shape, as was common practice at the time. Rather than buying a new waistcoat when the owner grew out of it, it would instead be altered to fit. This is clearly a period alteration and the fabric used is of the time, adding a nice piece to the story of the item.

All in all a nice early waistcoat with many early features.
