Original 1945 Dated RAF Ordinary Airman's Greatcoat - Size 6

SOLD

Code: 53718

A good original example of an RAF Ordinary Airman's Greatcoat in a size No. 6 and clearly dated 1945.

Officially designated 'Greatcoats Blue Grey, O.A.', this pattern of greatcoat came into use with the RAF during the 1930s and saw use throughout the Second World War before being replaced by the 'New Pattern' greatcoat in the immediate post-war years. The coat is fitted with original wartime economy printed eagle badges to the top of each sleeve.

This greatcoat features the correct number of brass King's crown buttons and a white blanket lining to the interior. The original label is still present and states the coat as being a size No. 6 Which will fit up to 5' 8" tall, and a 37 - 39" chest. The 1945 date is present as is the War Department broad arrow marking and the maker's name of 'Bignell, Phillips & Greene'.

As well as this there are two War Department acceptance stamps. One is faded on surmounted by the letter 'Z' for 1945 (not pictured), whilst the other is surmounted by 'R' denoting 1947. This suggests the coat was issued on two occasions. It is also marked 'P.W.S' which may relate to the second acceptance stamp.

The overall condition of the Greatcoat is good although it has some signs of wear and age. The blue serge wool is still a lovely deep coloured and has not faded out with the sun and overall the coat looks to be very wearable. Please bear in mind that this is a vintage coat of almost 80 year old and may have small issues commensurate with age.

All in all, a good example of a wartime RAF OA greatcoat which are becoming increasingly hard to find. This would compliment any RAF collection or complete a re-enactment uniform nicely.
