Original 1940s Blue Harris Tweed Suit by 'Montague Burton'

SOLD

Code: 53673

A stunning original two piece blue Harris Tweed suit made by 'Montague Burton' during the 1940s.

This suit is made from a striking RAF blue coloured Harris Tweed which is bright and bold, especially when compared to many of the common pinstripe suits offered during this period. Not only does it bear the Burton label but it also has the 1940s black Harris Tweed label, making this a highly desirable 1940s British suit.

The jacket is typical of the era featuring a single breasted and a three button front which fastens with leather 'football' buttons. The pronounced notch lapel, short 'bum freezer' length and lack of any rear vents are also common traits of jackets from this period. The jacket features strapped flapped lower pockets with a flapped ticket pocket above the right pocket which is a feature of more sporting jackets from the period. The cuffs are functioning which is a sign of this being a higher quality suit than many offered by Burton during the 1940s. They fasten with smaller versions of the leather 'football' buttons used to fasten the front of the suit. The interior of the jacket is fully lined in rayon and there is a hanging loop to the neck. The original labels are present and bright and legible, including a paper label which is located inside the interior pocket.

The trousers are again a classic example of 1940s British tailoring. They feature a high rise waist, wide leg with turn up to the cuff and a button fly. More buttons are fitted around the top edge to which braces can be attached and there is a single pocket to the rear. The front of the trousers feature twin pleats and slash pockets are found at each hip. A nice detail is the tunnel style belt loops around the waist which are an uncommon feature on British trousers from this period. There is also a large ticket pocket located to the waistband which fastens with a contrasting butterscotch coloured button.

The suit will fit someone of around a 40" chest and 34" waist depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

Jacket
Chest - 22"
Inside arm - 18 3/4"
Outside arm - 26"
Shoulders - 17 1/2"
Length - 28 1/2"

Trousers
Waist - 17"
Rise - 14 1/2"
Rear rise - 19"
Inside leg - 29 1/2"
Outside leg - 42"
Cuff - 11"

The suit is in excellent condition as can be seen in the pictures. It is still a nice deep blue colour and has not faded out with washing or exposure to sunlight. There are no signs of damage or wear and overall it is a very wearable suit. The only flaw is to the inside of the left leg where there are a number of holes (picture 24). These are hard to see when worn and even harder to see in the pictures! They become evident when handling the trousers under close scrutiny. These could be repaired to make the suit perfect but it is still very wearable as is.  This is a vintage, pre-worn suit which is over 70 years old and may therefore have small issues commensurate with age. Please take time to study the pictures.

A striking original period suit in great condition and with very desirable labels. This would make a brilliant addition to any wardrobe!
