Original WW2 British Army Private Purchase Khaki Drill Tunic 'Ensign'

£80.00 Approx $100.88, €93.35

Code: 53663

An original private purchase British Army four pocket khaki drill tunic made by 'Ensign' during the 1940s.

This tunic is rare in that it is a private purchase item which was bought by someone serving in the ranks, rather than an officer. There is clear evidence of where corporal stripes have been removed which confirms this. Various outfitters offer private purchase uniforms which could be bought by anyone and it was usually of a higher quality than their issue counterparts, as is the case with this example which is very well made. The tunic is made from a cotton drill which has a slightly polished finish to it and the sleeves are lined. Revolving shank buttons are fitted to the front of the tunic whilst the pockets fasten with horn examples.

Inside the tunic the original label is still present and, for some reason has been fitted upside down - a manufacturer's quirk? It bears the maker's name of 'Ensign' along with the slogan 'Aristocrat of clothes'. The original owner has added his name to the label, no doubt wanting to mark his expensive property!

The tunic will suit around a 34" chest well and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 18 1/2"
Inside arm - 17 1/2"
Outside arm - 24"
Length - 29 1/2"
Shoulders - 17 1/2"

The tunic is in worn condition but is still very wearable. It has some limited staining and wear along with a small hole to the rear of the left shoulder as detailed in picture 9. The sleeve lining has also pulled away in places. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small issues commensurate with age.

A nice original jacket with some great details.
