Original 1940s Harris Tweed Single Breasted Overcoat by 'Swallow'

SOLD

Code: 53508

An original British made men's coat by 'Swallow weathercoats' dating from the 1940s.

This style of coat was popular with men throughout the mid-Century period. It is cut in a loose, oversized manner and features a single breasted button front and a notched lapel. Slash pockets are located to each hip and the rear features a single vent. More buttons are fitted to the cuff but do not function, being purely decorative.

Inside the coat is fully lined in a silver-grey coloured rayon material. A hanging loop is located to the neck below which are the original labels. The uppermost of these is the classic 'Swallow Weathercoats' label which bears the tagline of 'Fine in the rain' and features a graphic depicting a swallow. Below this is the Harris Tweed label which is again typical of those seen during this period.

Interestingly, there is a layer between the lining and the outer tweed across the shoulders which is an additional weatherproofing layer, designed to keep the wearer dry across the shoulders and chest. It is a nice detail and typical of the quality of 'Swallow' items.

The coat is a large size which will easily fit a 42" - 44" chest and quite possibly larger, depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 26 1/2"
Inside arm - 17 1/2"
Outside arm - 25 1/2"
Shoulders - 19 3/4"
Length - 43 1/2"

The coat is in nice condition for its age with limited signs of wear and use. There is a very small hole to the front as can be seen in picture 6 although this is only noticeable under close inspection. Overall, the coat is very wearable and displays well but is a vintage item so may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A classic British overcoat in a great colour and with a fantastic label!
