Original WW2 RAF Irvin Flying Trousers

SOLD

Code: 53499

An original pair of RAF Irvin sheepskin flying trousers dating from the Second World War.

This pattern of trousers was introduced into service with the RAF In 1938 and was intended to be worn with the matching jacket. Officially designated 'Thermally Insulated Flying Suit, Trousers' this pattern saw extensive use with Bomber Command throughout the Second World War but were also used by Fighter Command and Coastal Command. It was designed by Leslie Irvin and has become an iconic piece of Second World War clothing today.

The trousers are made from the standard sheepskin leather which features a waterproof coating to the exterior. The original braces are still present and the nickel plated metal buckles are still in good condition. Two pockets are located at each thigh and fasten with press studs. A fly can be found to the front and pocket openings are present to the hip - all of which fasten with press studs.

Full length zips run the length of the trousers and are original 'D.O.T' examples which work very well with no damage. The pullers are unmarked and both retain their original leather pull tabs.

The original label is no longer present inside the trousers but based on the measurements they should fit around a 32" - 34" waist and would have been labeled as a size 3 or possibly 4. When laid flat the trousers measure -

Waist (top) - 19"
Inside leg - 31"

The trousers are in good condition overall and display well. There are no serious areas of damage or wear but some signs of age. There is some loss to the chrome finish in places and the braces have no elasticity but overall they are a sound example.

A nice pair of wartime Irvin flying trousers which are in good condition.
