Original Late WW2 Multi Panel RAF Irvin Flying Jacket - Size 2

A very nice original late Second World War Irvin Flying Jacket in a small size 2. 

This jacket features a 'multi panel' construction which is typical of the examples made in the last two years of the war. The panels are made from mismatched off cuts and left over pieces of sheepskin which create a patchwork, contrasting effect. The jacket retains all of its original zips with the main zipper being a standard brass RAF pattern example. The sleeves feature Air Ministry marked zips made by swift. All the zips retain their original leather pull tabs which are held on with a brass rivet. The original waist belt is also present and features a nickel plated buckle. Metal eyelets are fitted as vents to each armpit and there are two metal loops under the collar which fasten the collar strap. 

Inside the jacket the original metal hanging chain is still present and is in good order. When the jacket is laid open the variety of sheepskin styles used is plain to see. 

The jacket is a smaller size which will suit a 36" chest for a fitted look or a smaller chest for a more authentic period look. When studying the measurements it is important to remember that the jacket is made of thick sheepskin which needs to be accounted for. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 21 1/2"
Inside arm - 17 1/2"
Outside arm - 24"
Shoulders - 19"
Length - 23 3/4"

The jacket is in excellent, wearable condition overall and it displays very well. It is still supple and shows no signs of stitch rot etc. It does have a few small flaws, the majority of which are detailed in the pictures. The main zip is missing a single tooth (picture 8) although this does not affect the working of the zip which is excellent. There are also two teeth missing to the right sleeve zip but again it still works as it should and there is no reason to ever unzip as far as the missing teeth. There are some small holes to the right armpit as shown in picture 20 and a couple  more to the armpit on the other side. There is also a very small hole to the front (picture 21) and one or two others dotted around. Overall however the jacket is a very good example.

A very nice late war jacket which would make a great addition to any collection or wardrobe without a doubt!
