Original WW2 Period Royal Navy Officers Peaked Cap by 'Gieves'

SOLD

Code: 53102

An original 1940s Royal Navy Officer's peaked cap made by 'Gieves' and in good condition.

This pattern of cap was officially called the officers 'Blue Cap' and saw service for many years. This example is typical of 1940s examples being made from black wool and featuring a black patent leather peak which has a green underside. A patent leather chin strap is held onto the cap cap with two black fabric covered buttons. A mohair band is fitted around the cap to which a bullion King's bullion cap badge is fitted. Due to the cap being private purchase there is no date inside meaning it is impossible to date exactly. It is the correct pattern used throughout the Second World War and undoubtedly dates from this period.

Inside the cap features a leather sweatband and a rayon lining. The original label is still present and bears the maker's name of 'Gieves' who were a prolific maker of uniforms for the Royal Navy. The original owner's name is marked in ink and reads 'S. C. Briggs'.

The hat is approximately a 6 7/8 and measures 21 1/2" around the internal circumference.

The hat is in good condition and has been well looked after. There are signs of wear and use with some oxidisation to the metal work and some areas of imperfections on the bullion cap badge. Overall it displays well and has a fantastic, authentic look to it.

A nice original WW2 period cap which would make a good addition to any collection.
