Rare Original 1930s Double Breasted Overcoat by 'Aquascutum'

SOLD

Code: 53042

A rare original 1930s men's double breasted overcoat in a blue herringbone twill wool with subtle orange overcheck, made by 'Aquascutum'.

This style of overcoat became extremely popular with men in the late 1930s and remained a prolific style through to the early 1950s. It is made from a heavy blue-grey coloured herringbone striped wool which features a subtle orange coloured overcheck which is typical of the era. The coat features a double breasted closure and a matching waist belt which fastens with a leather buckle. A notched collar is present and the cuffs feature a turnback detail which fastens with buttons. Two pockets are located to the front and are partly lined in a soft, velvet like material - testament to the high quality of this coat.

The interior of the coat is partially lined in rayon and features a hanging loop to the neck. A large label is located below this and bears the makers name of 'Aquascutum' as well as Royal appointments to both the Late King George V and The Prince of Wales 1930 - 1936 which helps date the coat. Below the interior pocket is the H. J. Cook' label and inside the pocket is a second label baring the Aquascutum name and some details added in ink. The numbers 37 have been written on the label which may refer to the year of manufacture as the coat was made around this time.

These coats are cut in a loose, oversize manner as they are intended to be worn as an outer layer over a suit etc. This coat will fit a 40" - 42" chest well depending on desired fit and when laid flat measures -

Chest - 25"
Inside arm - 18 1/2"
Outside arm - 26 1/2"
Shoulders - 18 3/4"
Length - 47"

The coat is in good condition and displays very well. It has been worn and shows some signs of age and wear. There is a slight loss of stitching to the right sleeve (picture 11) and there are a couple of small holes as are also detailed in the pictures. The leather waist belt buckle also shows wear, as they often do. The coat is not perfect but it is a very wearable example overall. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item with some small issues commensurate with this.

A fantastic original pre Second World War coat in a stunning cloth and with great labels!
