Original 1943 Dated British Army Greatcoat, Size 1 - Converted

An original British Army 1940 Pattern (Dismounted) Greatcoat dating from 1943 which has been cut down into a 'Bum Freezer' style coat. 

This coat would have originally been knee length as it is a dismounted pattern greatcoat. The original owner has shortened it however and has had the rear nicey tailored too. The buttons have been replaced with large size gilt buttons throughout which give the coat and extra quality feel. Converting coats was extremely popular with British soldiers in North West Europe during the cold winter of 1944 - 45. Active service conditions meant that dress regulations were replaced and many servicemen had warm weather clothing made and converted locally. This coat is quite likely one such item. 

The coat is made from the standard khaki green coloured blanket serge wool and features a partial lining made from a wool shirting material. The collar features a hook and eye as well as a tab which buttons across. Two safety pins are fitted which must have served a purpose at some time. 

Inside the coat the original label is still present and is bright and legible. The label states the size as No. 1 which is designed to fit a 34" - 36" chest and a height of 5' 3" - 5' 4". The manufacturers name of 'Sartor Manufacturing Co' is present as is the 1943 date and the War Department broad arrow marking. 

When laid flat the coat measures - 

Chest - 19 1/2"
Inside arm - 16 1/2"
Outside arm - 24"
Shoulders - 17 1/2"
Length - 31 1/2"

The coat is in very good condition for its age and it displays well. It is still very wearable and there are no flaws that I can find. This is of course a pre-worn, vintage item which may have small issues commensurate with age. Please study the pictures carefully before purchasing.
