Original 1940s German Rubberised Motoring Coat

SOLD

Code: 52695

An original German motoring coat made by 'Klepper' and dating from the 1940s.

Klepper were a prolific maker of waterproof outerwear in the mid Century period and often created interesting and innovative designs.

This coat is a truly stunning piece of design and has a plethora of fantastic details. It is cut in the long, trench coat style which was popular for motoring and aviation enthusiasts throughout the entire first half of the 20th Century. The body of the coat is made from a dark, charcoal grey coloured rubberised cotton material which is still extremely soft and pliable - as it would have been when new. The coat has a wrap-around closure which fastens inside with a tab and press stud (picture 15), aside from which only the main waist belt fastens the coat. The coat features a contrasting collar, storm flap to the right shoulder, angled pocket to the right breast, two lower flapped pockets which fasten with press studs and a fantastic cuff which again can be fastened with press studs in two different positions. Suede patches are fitted under each arm (picture 8) and the number '45' has been added to the breast at some point and would suggest a racing link or similar.

Inside the coat features a partial liner across the shoulders. 'Kleeper' branded nickel plated zippers are located to the skirt and are used to shorten the coat into a three quarter length jacket which is a very interesting piece of design. There are also press studs to aid with this which are marked 'Durable DOT', as are all the other studs. The studs also feature the makers initials of 'RG' which are often found on German items from this period.

The coat is designed to be worn as a waterproof, windproof outer layer and is therefore cut to be worn over clothes. When laid flat the coat measures -

Chest - 24"
Inside arm - 17"
Outside arm - 24 1/2"
Shoulders - 19 1/2"
Length - 48"

The coat is in excellent condition for its age and it displays very well. It appears to be totally wearable and is soft and pliable as it would have been when new. All the press studs and zips are present and there are no serious signs of wear or use. There are a few marks and a couple of blue paint marks to the rear although these are small. It is of course a vintage, pre-owned item so may have small issues commensurate with this. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.

An incredible piece of outerwear with loads of fantastic details. This would make a fantastic addition to any archive or collection without a doubt!
