Original 1980s Men's Coat by 'Grenfell' - Size 40

An original 1960s men's coat made by 'Grenfell' and in a size 40.

Grenfell are a well known British brand who made high quality outerwear during the second half of the 20th Century. Grenfell used their own cloth for the outer shells of the coats which is known as 'Grenfell Cloth' and  is a densely-woven cotton gabardine material used to make luxury and outdoor clothing since its creation in 1923. It has excellent windproof and waterproof qualities which led to them being a popular brand. 

The coat is cut in a simple, almost utilitarian manner which is typical of vintage Grenfell garments. It features two main flapped pockets to the lower portion of the jacket and a 'Riri' brand zipper fastens the front. The rear of the jacket features pleats above the waistband which give the jacket an interesting shape, similar to an action back. The cuffs fasten with buttons and the collar can be fastened around the neck, again with a button.  

Inside the coat the original label is still present and features the classic Grenfell design.  'By Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen Manufacturers of Grenfell Cloth Haythornthwaite & Sons Ltd. Made in England'. The Royal crest of arms is present to the top of the label as is the registered trademark logo which dates this to post - 1962. Above this is another label which reads 'Made in England' - a style of label typically found in clothing from this period. There is also a care label and size label lower down inside the jacket. The size is stated as 40 and when laid flat the coat measures - measures - 

Chest - 23"
Inside arm - 17 3/4"
Outside arm - 25 1/2"
Length - 28"
Shoulders - 18"

The coat is in good condition with only minor signs of age and wear. There is some soiling to the inside of the collar and there are some marks and light staining to the exterior. Overall the coat is in nice condition and is very wearable but please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a pre-worn, vintage coat which has small issues commensurate with age.
