Original 1940s CC41 Blue Pinstripe Double Breasted Men's Suit - 42

SOLD

Code: 52533

An original 1940s Men's two piece double breasted suit made by 'Burton' and in a size 42.

This jacket was made as part of the CC41 utility scheme which was brought into effect in the UK in 1941 as part of the larger rationing scheme. The idea behind it was that affordable, quality clothing would be available to everyone of every class and could be bought using coupons.

The suit is typical of the era in so many ways. It is cut from a blue wool which features a white and electric blue coloured pinstripe which is so class of the period. The jacket features a double breasted front with large peak lapels which both feature button holes. The shoulders are heavily padded and the jacket is cut short in the body and features no rear vents which are again typical traits from this period. The jacket is fully lined in black rayon and features the maker's label below the interior pocket. As well as this is the CC41 utility label which bears the specific number X209A.

The trousers are also typical of the period featuring a high rise waist, a wide leg and turn up to the cuff. The fly fastens with buttons (many of which have been replaced with period examples) and slash pockets are located to each hip. A single pocket can be found to the rear and braces are fitted around the waist to which braces can be attached. An extra button and button hole has been added to the top of the fly as shown in the pictures.

The suit is a generous size which will suit a 42". When laid flat it measures -

Jacket
Chest - 22 1/2"
Inside arm - 19 1/2"
Outside arm - 27 1/4"
Shoulders - 19"
Length - 30"

Trousers
Waist - 15 3/4"
Rise - 14"
Rear rise - 18 1/2"
Inside leg - 31"
Outside leg - 44 1/2"
Cuff - 10 1/2"

Overall the suit displays well and is very wearable but it has seen plenty of wear. It is by no means a perfect vintage suit and has a variety of flaws. There is wear to the cuff of the trousers and repairs to the cuffs of the jacket. The waist of the trousers has been let out and finished fairly crudely. There is a small darn near one of the trouser pockets. The jacket has a small repair to the top of the right sleeve and another to the rear and some of the stitching is pulling around the collar and shoulders. There is some minor staining although nothing that is obvious. Overall it is very wearable and presents well but please study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a far from perfect, pre-worn vintage suit.

A classic 1940s men's suit in a harder to find size and cut from a classic period cloth.
