Original 1930s British Sports Shirt by 'Verinice'

SOLD

Code: 52234

A rare original British sports shirt dating from the 1930s.

This shirt is typical of those worn for sports and sometimes as casual wear by men in Great Britain during the 1930s and 1940s. Made from a white coloured brushed cotton; the shirt features a large collar, patch pocket to the breast and long sleeves. It is of half placket design as was usual in the first half of the 20th century before being slowly replaced by full button front shirts from the 1950s onwards. Interestingly, the barrel cuff features two buttonholes meaning that the shirt was designed to be worn with cufflinks.

Inside the shirt the original label is still present and bears the makers name of 'Verinice Brand'. Below this is a second label with the outfitters name 'A. F. Searby Hatter and Hosier Bridlington'. There is also a small size label with features a red coloured 'M'.

The shirt is a smaller size which will suit a 38" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat measures -

Chest - 22"
Inside arm - 20 1/2""
Outside arm - 23"
Shoulders - 17"
Length at front - 29"
Length at back - 33"

It is important to remember that these shirts are cut very wide across the chest to allow them to be pulled on over the head so the true fit will be much smaller than the measurement provided.

The shirt is in reasonable condition but has some staining as can be seen in the pictures. This is a far from perfect shirt but it may be possible to clean some of the marks out with the right knowledge. Please study the pictures before purchasing.

A rare original pre-war British sports shirt!
