Original 1940s Royal Navy PVC Oilskin Waterproof Coat

SOLD

Code: 52111

An original British Royal Navy oilskin PVC coat as used throughout the first half of the 20th century for a variety of working roles.

This style of coat was popular with fishermen and dockers amongst others who had to work outside in wet and windy conditions. The Royal Navy also has had an issue version for many years and this example is an issue coat as can be seen by the label.

This coat is typical of those made in the mid Century period. It is made from a black coloured PVC oilskin material which was ideally suited to wet conditions as it is highly waterproof. It features a short collar which is lined with a black coloured wool, two patch pockets to the front and full button front fastening. Being a workwear piece of utilitarian design it features a straight sleeve with no cuff but does have a rear vent which fastens with a single button.

Inside the coat the original label is present although it has been washed out leaving only the words 'Coat, Waterproof' legible. A large section has been painted inside with the word 'BOS'N' still visible meaning this belonged to a Royal Navy Boatswain originally.

The coat is designed to be worn as an outer layer and is therefore cut in a generous, wide manner.  It will suit someone of around a 38" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 23"
Inside arm - 16 1/2"
Outside arm - 23 1/2"
Shoulders - 18"
Length - 42 1/2"

The coat is in good condition with some signs of wear and age. There is a button missing to the front of the coat but generally speaking the coat appears to be in sound wearable condition. Please take time to study them and bear in mind that this is a pre-worn work coat which may have other small issues commensurate with age.

A good original Royal Navy PVC oilskin coat!
