Original 1940s British Overcoat by 'CWS'

SOLD

Code: 52026

An original Men's overcoat made by CWS in the 1940s.

This style of overcoat was popular with British Army officers in both World Wars and in the subsequent post-war period. It is cut much shorter in the body than traditional overcoats of the period and is made from a thick pile, camel coloured wool. The coat features a double breasted closure to the front, notched lapels, large patch pockets with flap to the front and tabs to each wrist. A rear vent is present to the rear.

The interior of the coat is fully lined with rayon and features a single interior pocket. The maker's label is still present to the neck and reads 'CWS Society Wear'. CWS stands for Co-operative Workers Society, better known today as the Co-op. A second smaller label is also present to the interior and reads 'All Wool'. This label is often found in items from this period.

The coat is designed to be worn over a suit and is therefore generously cut across the chest. It would most likely suit someone of around a 40" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat measures -

Chest - 23 1/2"
Inside arm - 17"
Outside arm - 26"
Shoulders - 19 1/4"
Length - 42"

The coat is in good condition with some limited signs of age and wear. There is a small graze to one of the sleeves and another small flaw to the rear of the coat, both of which are detailed in the pictures. Overall the coat displays very well but it is a vintage item so may have small issues commensurate with age.

A nice original period overcoat with some great details, made from a fantastic fabric.
