Original 1940s British Khaki Drill Shorts with Brass Waist Buckle

SOLD

Code: 51936

An original pair of 1940s khaki drill shorts with large brass waist buckle.

These shorts are typical of those worn in the 1940s and 1950s by both military personnel and civilians. Like many KD items made during this period, these shorts are theatre made; the stitching and buttons being a clear indicator of this. They could well be a private purchase pair of military shorts as many officers had new uniforms locally made whilst serving in the tropics.

The construction of the shorts is typical of the period. They are made from a khaki colour cotton drill and feature a button fly, two slash pockets to each hip and no rear pocket. What sets these shorts aside from others however is the brass buckle used to fasten the front of the shorts which is the same as those used on the waist belts of tunics. This is an uncommon style to encounter but a great piece of design. The buckle is removable for washing, as is usual with KD items such as this. The shorts also feature inverted belt loops to the waist which fasten with buttons.

The shorts will fit someone of around a 32" waist and when laid flat measure -

Waist - 16 1/2"
Rise - 15"
Rear rise - 18 1/2"
Inside leg - 9"
Outside leg - 21"
Cuff - 15"

The shorts are in good condition with some signs of wear and use as can be seen in the pictures. There is some loss of stitching to the tab which holds the waist belt and another small area to the seat, both of which are shown in the pictures and don't overly detract from the item. There is also a small repair nect to one of the button holes at the wasit although this is not visible when the shorts are worn or displayed. Please bear in mind that these are a pre-owned pair of vintage shorts which may have other small issues commensurate with age.

A nice pair of original 1940s shorts with a great waist belt detail!
