Original 1950s Men's Collarless Striped Shirt by 'Rochester'

An original men's collarless shirt made by 'Rochester' in the 1950s. 

This shirt is typical of those made and worn during the 1940s and 1950s. It is made from a white poplin cotton with a pinstripe pattern and is of half placket design which is pulled on over the head. This design was prevalent from the Victorian period through to the 1950s when full button front shirts started to gain popularity.  

The collar is neckband style made from the same material as the body of the shirt. It is designed to be worn with a detachable collar but can also be worn without one. Below this the original label is still present to the interior and features the brand name 'Rochester'. The collar has the number 15 stamped to it which denotes the neck size.

The shirt is a medium size which will suit around a 38" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat measures - 

Chest - 23"
Inside arm - 23"
Outside arm - 26 1/4"
Shoulders - 17 1/4"
Length at front - 32"  
Length at back - 36 1/2"
Collar - 15"

It is important to remember that these shirts are cut very wide across the chest to allow them to be pulled on over the head so the true fit will be much smaller than the measurement provided. This shirt also features a french cuff which would usually be worn doubled back and will shorten the sleeve length by roughly 2".

The shirt is in good condition for its age with some limited signs of wear and use. It displays very well but may have small issues commensurate with age including a couple of small marks to the rear as pictured. 

A nice original mid-century shirt, typical of those worn in Great Britain during the 1940s and 1950s.
