Original 1940s Rubberised Macintosh Raincoat by 'Mascot'

SOLD

Code: 51737

An original Rubberised Mackintosh raincoat made by 'Mascot' in the 1940s.

This style of raincoat was extremely popular during the 1930s and 1940s both with civilians and officers of the British Army. The simple single breasted fly fronted design, raglan sleeve and waist belt are typical period features seen on both military and civilian raincoats.

The coat is made from a thick rubberised canvas which was often used for raincoats in this period as it is highly waterproof. A waist belt is made from matching material and features a leather buckle. The sleeves feature a tab and button to the outside whilst inside is an elasticated storm cuff as shown in the pictures. Inside the coat are leg straps to keep the coat secure in high winds and the original throat latch is still present. The hanging loop inside the neck is present but broken.

The makers label has survived and states the manufactures reads 'Produced in London, Mascot Regd, For All Weathers' and features graphics typical of the period.

This style of coat is cut in a wide, oversize manner as it is designed to be worn as an outer layer. I would say the coat will fit a medium build and when laid flat measures -

Chest - 25"
Inside arm -20"
Outside arm - 25"
Length - 46"

The coat is in distressed condition and has plenty of signs of wear and age. The material is stiff and some of the front buttons are missing. The leather buckle fitted to the waist belt is very worn and shedding some leather and the hanging loop is broken as previously stated. Please study the pictures.

Whilst not in very good condition, this is a classic design piece with some great details and a great period label. It may benefit from restoration or would make a good archive or pattern piece.
