Original 1945 Dated 'Coat, British Warm'

SOLD

Code: 51144

An original 1945 dated British Army Officers Overcoat, often referred to as an ‘Officers Warm’.

This style of officers coat started to be seen around the turn of the century and was reasonably popular in the First World War as well as the Second World War. It is made from a heavy khaki wool serge and features a contrasting blanket lining making it a very warm coat. The coat features a double breasted closure to the front which fastens with leather football buttons as are commonly found on this style of coat.

A particularly nice detail is the button storm cuff which is inside each sleeve and illustrated in the photographs. Even though this is an issue coat, such details as this show that a high standard was still maintained in the design and manufacture of clothing.

Inside the coat retains its original issue label which reads ‘Coat, British Warm, Size No.6’. The makers name is also present and reads ‘ John Fairdale LTD’ as it the 1945 date and the War Department broad arrow marking. The coat is designed to fit someone with between a 40” and 42” chest so a generous size for the period and ideal today.

The overall condition of the coat is very nice as can be seen in the pictures. There are sadly a couple of moth nips to the collar as illustrated and a couple more to the righthand sleeve. This does not overly detract from the coat which otherwise displays very well. Please study the pictures and take into consideration that this is a pre-worn vintage item and may have small issues consummate with its age.

All in all a fantastic coat with only a couple of minor issues. This coat is a larger wearable size and has some great details as well as a wartime date. It would make a great addition to a collection or could suit a re-enactor.
