A rare original 1940 dated Women's Royal Naval Service Officer's tunic in good condition.
This pattern of tunic was worn throughout the Second World War and was based on the men's design. It is made from a Doeskin wool and features a double breasted front which fastens with gilt Royal Navy buttons which feature a King's crown and fouled anchor design. The cuff features electric blue coloured rank lacing which denotes the rank of Second Officer. A single medal ribbon is fitted to the left breast which denotes the Defence Medal and means that the original owner wore this tunic from 1940 all the way through until the end of hostilities.
The interior of the tunic is fully lined and there is a hanging loop at the neck. There is a single interior pocket, inside which is the original maker's label. It bears the maker's name of 'Gieves' who were a prolific manufacturer of clothing for officers serving in the Royal Navy and are still one of the most famous today. The date of 1/5/40 is still present and is more legible in person than illustrated in the attached pictures. The original owner's name 'Bell' is also present.
The tunic will suit around a 32" bust and when laid flat it measures -
Bust - 17 1/2"
Inside arm - 16 1/2"
Outside arm - 22 1/2"
Shoulders - 14 1/2"
Length - 23"
The tunic is in good condition and overall displays very well. It looks to still be very wearable with no major flaws or damage although these are some holes to the lining near the hanging loop. These are illustrated in the pictures and are not visible when worn or displayed on a mannequin. Please study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
A very nice original example with a great early date that clearly saw use throughout the war.
