A nice original 1943 dated Women's Auxiliary Air Force Battledress Blouse in good condition and in a size 3.
This pattern of blouse came into issue with the WAAF during 1941 as a working dress. It mirrors the men's jacket in a number of ways and is made from the same RAF blue wool serge material. This particular example is the austerity pattern which features exposed buttons which are black plastic examples. There is a single metal hook and eye at the collar and no epaulettes.
Inside the jacket the original label is present and is still bright and legible. It bears the title of 'Suit, Working, Serge W.A.A.F Blouse' and states the size as No. 3. The maker's name of 'L. Harris Ltd' is also present as is the 1944 date and the War Department broad arrow marking. The original owner has also marked their name in ink as well as the last three digits of their serial number.
The jacket is designed to fit a 33" - 36" bust and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 19"
Waist - 14 1/2"
Inside arm - 17"
Outside arm - 22 3/4"
Shoulders - 15 1/2"
Length - 19 1/2"
The overall condition of the blouse is very good and it displays well. Whilst it has clearly been issued, there are no serious signs of wear and use and altogether it is a very good example indeed. Please study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item so may have small flaws commensurate with age.
All in all a nice original women's item which is clearly dated and in good condition. WAAF uniform is becoming much harder to find and this would make a great addition to any WW2 collection.
