Scarce Original 1941 Dated RAF Leather Jerkin - Size 2

Code: 55130

SOLD

A rare original RAF Leather Jerkin dating from 1941 and in a size No. 2.

This pattern of leather jerkin came into issue with the British Army during the Great War and stayed in service throughout the Second World War and well into the post-war years. This particular example is the RAF pattern which features an RAF blue coloured lining which is interestingly made of jersey. The front of the tunic fastens with four buttons and there are reinforcing triangles of leather under each armpit. The exterior of the leather has been made from different size panels which is typical of wartime manufacture.

The original label is still present to the interior and is bright and legible. It bears the title of 'Jerkin Leather No. 2' along with size details. The manufacturer's name of 'Abbey Manufacturing Co Blackburn' is present below which is the 1941 RAF contract number. The Air Ministry crown is also present as is the 1941 date. It also appears that the original owner has added their name in ink to the label.

The tunic is designed to fit between a 37" and 43" chest and when laid flat it measures -

Chest - 23"
Shoulders - 21 1/2"
Length - 32"

The condition of the jerkin is very good for its age with only limited signs of wear and use. Overall it displays very well and is totally wearable with some slight crazing and signs of age to the leather exterior. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which has flaws commensurate with age.

RAF issue leather jerkins are very rare to find today, especially with the original label and a wartime date. This would make an excellent addition to any RAF collection without a doubt!
