An original matched set of RAF Officers Service Dress in good condition and dating from the Second World War.
This uniform is the pattern used by all RAF Officers throughout the Second World War and was superseded shortly after the conflict by a three button version. This genuine wartime example features a full set of brass kings crown buttons and matching brass belt buckle, all of which show signs of being well polished in their life, but have dulled right down and clearly not been touch for decades.
This particular example has two rings of rank on each sleeve denoting the rank of Flight Lieutenant. They are clearly original to the tunic. There also appears to have been a badge or ribbons applied above the left breast pocket at some stage although I can't make out anything clearly.
Both the jacket and trousers are an excellent match and have clearly always been together. They are both worn in but this is consistent over both articles.
The suit is very well made and the jacket has some nice interior details. The usual First Field Dressing pocket can be found to the lower right-hand side whilst the inside pocket is flapped with a button above this. The opposite side also features an inner pocket above which is a leather tab, almost certainly designed to attach a pocket watch to.
The trousers are again typical of the era being cut with a high rise to the waist and wide leg. The front of the trousers are pleated and slash pockets can be found in each side seam. The fly features contrasting caramel buttons with the same type being used for braces which are indicative of the time.
Inside the inner pocket there is a small paper label with a limited amount of information printed on it. It does state 36s though which almost certainly relates to the size. When laid flat it measures -
Chest - 19 1/4"
Inside arm - 18 1/2"
Outside arm - 25 3/4"
Length - 30"
Waist - 15 3/4"
Inside leg - 29"
The condition of the suit is good and it displays very well. It has clearly been worn and used and has some small issue consistent with this. The only serious issue is under one arm where the stitching has come away and there are some repairs to the crotch. This is shown in the pictures and is not difficult to fix. It also does not show when displayed or worn. Please study the pictures as they form part of the description.
All in all a nice original RAF Officers SD which would suit both the collector and re-enactor equally well.
