SOLD

A nice original pair of RAF Irvin Suit flying trousers in good condition made by 'D. G. L'.

This pattern of trousers was introduced into service with the RAF In 1938 and was intended to be worn with the matching jacket. Officially designated 'Thermally Insulated Flying Suit, Trousers' this pattern saw extensive use with Bomber Command throughout the Second World War but were also used by Fighter Command and Coastal. It was designed by Leslie Irvin and has become an iconic piece of Second World War clothing today.

The trousers are made from the standard sheepskin leather which features a waterproof coating to the exterior. The original braces are still present and the chrome plated metal buckles are still bright. Two pockets are located at each thigh and fasten with press studs. A fly can be found to the front and pocket openings are present to the hip - all of which fasten with press studs.

Full length zips run the length of the trousers and are original 'D.O.T' examples which feature the maker's name to one side and the Air Ministry AM and crown to the other. They still work very well with no damage.

Inside the trousers the original label is still present and bears the size of 2 which is designed to fit a 30" - 32" waist and a 30" leg. The Air Ministry marking and crown are present again as is the maker's name which reads 'D. G. L. London'.

When laid flat the trousers measure -

Waist (top) - 18"
Inside leg - 30"

The trousers are in excellent condition overall and display well. There are no serious areas of damage or wear but some signs of age. The only flaw is some loss of stitching around the side pocket (picture 16) and a very small area of stitch loss to the bottom of one leg (picture 17). Please study the pictures carefully before purchasing.

A nice pair of wartime Irvin flying trousers with a nice label and in fantastic condition.
