Incredible Original WW2 RAF Irvin Flying Jacket by 'Links'

Incredible Original WW2 RAF Irvin Flying Jacket by 'Links'

Code: 55128

A fantastic original Mid to late Second World War Irvin Flying Jacket which was made by 'Links' modified by its original Polish owner.

The multi panel construction of this jacket dates it to the middle or latter part of the Second World War and the shape of the collar denotes that it was made by 'Links' who were one of the prolific manufacturers of sheepskin jackets for the RAF during the war. It is clear that some of the panels were made from deconstructed trousers as there are some stitch marks from where banding has previously been fitted. The two large panels to the rear are also of note as they are the upper seat section from a pair of trousers turned upside down!

The exterior of the jacket is a beautiful chestnut brown colour and only shows limited signs of age and use. The jacket is strong, supple and the polyacrylic coating is very good overall. All the metal work is still very bright with only very minor signs of age which add to the jackets extremely fresh look. The main zip is original to the jacket and bears the 'Lightning' brand name and retains its original leather puller which is held in place with a brass rivet. The right sleeve zip is also original and bears the Air Ministry AM and crown marking. The other sleeve zip is missing the slider and has some stitching added to hold it in place. This can be replaced for an original period zip at cost but it is wearable as is and 'as found'. A metal chain hanging loop is present to the inside of the neck and each set of eight metal eyelets are present under each arm.

The truly brilliant thing about this jacket however is the conversion that the original owner carried out. He has had two large leather pockets added to the chest with the left one featuring a stitched pen pocket section. They both fasten with nickel plated 'Newey' branded press studs which feature a chocolate brown paint finish to the exterior. He also had leather straps added to the bottom of each cuff. These fasten with metal buckles and are clearly period additions.

The jacket is a small size which will suit around a 36" chest depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 21"
Inside arm - 22"
Outside arm - 24 1/2"
Shoulders - 19 1/2"
Length at back - 25"

The jacket is in excellent condition with no serious flaws or damage. It displays very well as can be seen in the pictures. Please take time to study these before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

An absolutely fantastic example which is all the better for the period conversion pieces - A true vintage one-off!
