SOLD

An original pair of RAF Irvin sheepskin flying trousers dating from the Second World War which are in very good condition.

This pattern of trousers was introduced into service with the RAF In 1938 and was intended to be worn with the matching jacket. Officially designated 'Thermally Insulated Flying Suit, Trousers' this pattern saw extensive use with Bomber Command throughout the Second World War but were also used by Fighter Command and Coastal Command. It was designed by Leslie Irvin and has become an iconic piece of Second World War clothing today.

The trousers are made from the standard sheepskin leather which features a waterproof coating to the exterior. The original braces are still present and the nickel plated metal buckles are still in good condition. Two pockets are located at each thigh and fasten with press studs. A fly can be found to the front and pocket openings are present to the hip - all of which fasten with press studs.

Full length zips run the length of the trousers and are original 'D.O.T' examples which work very well with no damage. The pullers are marked with the maker's name and both retain their original leather pull tabs. The metal zip buckets are also marked with the maker's name.

The trousers are a smaller size which will fit around a 30" waist. When laid flat the trousers measure -

Waist (top) - 18"
Inside leg - 29 1/2"

The trousers are in very good condition overall and display well. The leather is in very good condition with some small areas where the chrome finish has come away. The sheepskin is all in good condition and overall they are a very good example. There is a tooth missing from the lefthand zip which is illustrated in the pictures. The zip still functions as it should be care should be taken when using it. They are a vintage item which may have small issues commensurate with age so please take time to study the pictures.

A very good pair of wartime trousers which would make an excellent addition to any collection.
