An original second Pattern RAF C-Type Flying Helmet in good condition and in the largest size made - size No. 4.
This pattern of helmet is sometimes referred to as the 'Five Strap' version which was introduced towards the end of the war. This example features the sewn in metal oxygen mask clip, five straps to the rear and an elasticated chin strap. An original set of receivers are fitted inside the rubber era cups and are attached to a wiring loom which is again original to the helmet. To the end of the wiring loom the correct bell plug jacket is fitted.
To the left hand side of the helmet the original stamps are still present and include the War Department broad arrow marking and the RAF reference number of 22c/880 which denotes the helmet as a size 4. The original owner has marked his name to the interior in ink although it is now hard to read.
The helmet is in excellent condition and displays very well. The leather exterior is very good with only a few small nicks and the chamois interior is also very clean with some limited signs of wear and use. The rubber ear cups are supple and the receivers and wiring loom are in good condition. The paint is still present to the press studs and all the metal work is still bright and clean.
Altogether a very nice example of a C type helmet complete with its wiring and in a good large size.
