An original 1942 Dated Canadian made B Type Flying helmet in excellent condition and in a large size No.4.
This pattern of helmet closely resembles the British B Type flying helmet but has a number of different details. Made from brown leather and featuring a chamois lining, the helmet has a leather chin strap which fastens through a chromium plated buckle. To the rear of the helmet another chrome plated buckle is fitted through which a strap passes which is used to tighten the helmet around the back of the wearers head. Unlike its British made counterpart this helmet features two goggle straps which fasten with press studs.
The helmet is 'as issued' and therefore does not have any earcups. These would have been retro-fitted, often at squadron level. Helmets were still worn like this without the ear pieces in a number of scenarios during the war.
Inside the helmet the original markings are still present and bright and legible. The first marking bears the 1942 date as well as the size of 4 - the largest size made during the war. The other marking is the Canadian War Department stamp featuring the broad arrow surrounded by the letter c.
The helmet is in excellent condition and does not show any signs of undue wear or use and may well be unissued. It displays very well.
A nice original helmet with clear markings which would make a good addition to any aviation collection.
