A scarce original matched set of early World War Two British Army Mess tins as used by the BEF.
These rare early mess tins are different to the standard issue wartime mess tins usually seen on the market. They are the first pattern which are made from aluminium and are formed in a very square shape. The corners are much more angular than the standard war time pattern.
The larger of the two mess tins is maker marked ‘E & Co’ and dated 1939. It alsos bare inspector stamps which is a nice feature. The smaller mess tin has been repaired leaving no markings present. This is clearly a period repair and the mess tins are a matched set which belonged to the same owner as he has scratched his name into the side of each one which reads 'Chadwick'. This is illustrated in picture 3.
Whilst one tin has been repaired they are clearly a matched pair and this flaw has been reflected in the price.
