Rare Original 1950s British Army Officer's Macintosh Raincoat

Rare Original 1950s British Army Officer's Macintosh Raincoat

Code: 54620

SOLD

An original British made Rubberized Macintosh Raincoat made by 'Paratex', most likely in the early 1950s.

The style of this raincoat is totally unchanged from those of the 1930s and 1940s and it could easily pass as being from this period. This style of coat was very popular with British Army officers during the war but were also a common sight in towns and cities across the UK in the post-war period being worn by civilians.

The coat is made from a heavy rubberised material designed to keep the rain off and is half lined. The coat features a belt made from matching material and a leather covered buckle which is in worn condition. The coat has a single breasted front closure which is fly covered along with a raglan sleeve. Brown painted brass eyelets can also be found under each armpit and there is a hanging loop situated to the neck. The cuffs feature a buttoning tab and an elasticated storm cuff to the interior which fastens with a press stud.

Inside the coat there is a small belt at the waist which has metal painted eyelets which fits into a corresponding buckle on either side of the coat to keep it done up and in shape from the inside. There are also two more belts to the lower portion of the coat which can be used to fasten the coat around the legs. There is a half lining to the top which is backed with red wool. To this the original label is attached and it bears the maker's name of 'Paratex' as well as the Regd number of 430350.

The coat will fit around a 36" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat measures -

Chest - 22"
Inside arm - 18 3/4"
Outside arm - 25"
Length - 46 1/2"
Shoulders - 18 1/2"

The coat is in good condition with some signs of wear and use. It has some staining etc but is still soft and pliable and not dry and crispy as is sometimes the case with rubberised items such as this. The leather belt buckle is worn with some leather parts being fragile. The coat is very wearable and looks great but please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a pre-worn, vintage coat which may have small issues commensurate with age.

All in all, a good original Macintosh raincoat complete with its original belt. This would be a good addition to a period suit or British Army Officers impression.
