Original WW2 British Army Officer's Wool Shirt - RASC Attributed

A very nice original British Army Officers Shirt dating from the Second World War which belonged to Second Lieutenant E. J. Fasola who served with the Royal Army Service Corps during WW2.

It is quite possible that Fasola served in North West Europe during the Normandy campaign and subsequent breakout. The buttons on each cuff have been replaced with typical northern European buttons, most likely of French or Belgian origin (picture 4). It is unlikely these would have been used to replace missing buttons in the UK and would suggest the original owner was in Europe fighting. Fasola was commissioned on the 26th of February 1944 and was made up to a full lieutenant on the 26th of August of the same year - most likely following the heavy casualties of the previous two months.

The shirt is interesting as it is made from the same khaki green coloured flannel wool which was also used for ordinary rank's shirts. The neckband is different however, featuring twin button holes to the front and a single one to the rear to allow a detachable collar and tie to be worn. As well as this the shirt features a half button or 'tunic' front which is typical of the period, being later replaced by the full button front style.

Inside the shirt the original owner has added a name tag and has marked the numbers '644' to the inside of the neckband which are most likely the last 3 digits of his serial number. There is also a number '4' marked inside the collar which is a factory marking and denotes the size. This may suggest the shirt is an issue example, rather than private purchase.

The shirt is a smaller size which will suit around a 36" chest depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 21 1/2"
Inside arm - 21 1/2"
Outside arm - 23 1/2"
Shoulders - 16 1/2"
Length - 35"
Collar - 15 1/2"

The shirt is in excellent condition and displays very well. There are no serious signs of wear or use with no serious staining or marks. It is a vintage item however so may have small flaws commensurate with age.

All in all a very nice WW2 attributed shirt in great condition.
