A fine quality original beret which belonged to an Officer of the Royal Sussex Regiment.
This hat came to me along with a number of other items all relating to the same officer. They were found in a trunk where they have been stored for many years.
This hat is a private purchase example which was made by 'Standard Hat Works (Officers Wear Depot)' in Bangalore, India. Many British Officers served in Indian and had their kit made whilst stationed out there.
This particular beret is of very fine quality. The khaki wool top is of a soft fine type whilst the headband is made from a very soft suede which feels almost like velvet. The inside is lined and stitched in a quilted fashion with the makers label added over the top. The original size sticker is also still present and reads 7 1/8.
To the front of the beret is a bullion Royal Sussex Regiment cap badge which is truly stunning and completes the beret nicely.
The overall condition of the beret is very good and it displays very well. There is however one small hole to the outside of the cap as well as some red staining. Both of these faults are shown in the photographs and reflected in the price.
Altogether a nice original example of an officers beret, unlike any I have come across before. Not only is it an interesting maker but it is a very high quality piece.
