An original British Army Winter Tank Suit dated 1944 and in a size No 2, complete with matching hood.
These suits were issued in the winter of 1944-45 to a variety of armoured units and feature heavily in photographs from the period. They were often referred to as 'Zoot Suits' at the time and in the post-war years as the 'Pixie Suit'. Whilst production carried on in the post-war period, this suit is a scarce wartime manufactured example. Typical traits of wartime suits are the brass 'Lightning' branded zippers which fasten the front and the green plastic buttons used to secure the chest flap behind these. The original waist belt is present which are often missing.
The suit is typical of tank suits and features the original manufacturer's label in the right hand sleeve. It states the size as ‘Size 2’ which will fit up to a 34" - 36” chest and a 30" - 32” waist. The makers name 'Dunlop Rubber Co' is present as is the 1944 date and the War Department broad arrow marking.
The suit is in well used condition with lots of period repairs and staining etc. The press stud which fastens the lower left pocket has been removed and a field repair covers the place it was originally fitted. One of the main zips is also faulty, whilst the other works as it should. The faulty zip is in the closed position and a safety pin has been fitted to stop it from being undone. The puller does not close the zip but the zip can be closed by hand with some patience. It is possible to put the suit on without undoing this zip meaning that it should be fine if left as is. This flaw has been reflected in the price. Please study the pictures before purchasing.
Whilst not a perfect example it is still a genuine wartime suit with a clear date which can be displayed or possibly worn. A must have for anyone interested in armoured units who served in North West Europe in 1944 and 1945.
