Original 1943 Dated British Army Camouflage Windproof Trousers

SOLD

An original pair of 1943 dated British army camouflage windproof trousers in a size 5 and in good condition.

This pattern of trousers was introduced in 1943 and was based on the earlier drab and snow windproof trousers. These examples are made from the  lightweight gabardine fabric and are cut in the same style as the earlier windproofs with a wide leg, drawstring waist and map pocket to the left leg. The seat features a reinforced section and ankle tabs are located to the cuff which fasten with green vegetable ivory (plastic) buttons.

To the rear of the trousers the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the title 'Trousers, Windproof, Camouflaged' and the size of 5. The manufacturer's name 'The Fifty Shilling Tailors' is present as is the date of 1943 and the War Department broad arrow marking.

The trousers are designed to be worn over the battledress uniform and are therefore cut in a wide manner. The drawstring waist allows them to be pulled in a lot but when laid flat they measure -

Waist - 21"
Rise - 16"
Rear rise - 19"
Inside leg - 30 1/2"
Outside leg - 45 1/2"
Cuff - 11"

The trousers are in good condition overall with limited signs of wear and use. There are numerous repairs which have been done to a high standard on a machine and are very hard to see due to the camouflage pattern. A piece of what appears to be French Lizard Camo material has been used to repair the opening for the drawstring as detailed in picture 6. This is clearly a period repair and would suggest these were used by the French.

Overall they display well and are very wearable but please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that these are a vintage, worn pair of trousers which have small issues commensurate with age.

A nice original pair of windproof trousers with a good label and date.
