An original 1941 dated 'Coats, Kapok' which are more commonly known as Tropal Coats.
This pattern of coat was introduced in 1940 for the ill-fated landings in Norway. Production carried on into the first part of the Second World War with them seeing action with the Long Range Desert Group amongst other units. There was an early pattern which was sheepskin lined which was replaced by the kapok lined version as sheepskin was needed for RAF flying clothing. The first pattern coats and the early Kapok coats had metal fasteners whilst the later pattern had wooden toggles.
The coat is very heavy and incredibly well built being designed for extreme cold temperatures. The outer part of the coat is made from a khaki coloured cotton canvas and the interior features a quilted section. In between this is a waterproof interlining (picture 11) and a kapok filling to make the coat both waterproof and warm. The front of the coat fastens with metal clasp buckles and two flapped pockets are located to the skirt. The coat features a large collar which is faced with khaki coloured serge wool and the rear features a vent which fastens with a single button.
Inside the coat the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the title 'Coats, Kapok' below which is the size of 3 which is intended to fit a 37" - 42" chest. The maker's name of 'M. Shorn & Sons Ltd' is also present as is the 1941 date and the War Department broad arrow. As well as this there is a War Department acceptance stamp which is surmounted by the letter 'P' which confirms 1941 as the year of issue.
The coat will fit up to a 42" chest well and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 26"
Inside arm - 17"
Outside arm - 25 1/4"
Shoulders - 19 1/2"
Length at back - 48"
The coat is in good condition with some signs of wear and age. There are no serious flaws and the coat is totally wearable but there are some storage marks, most notably to the sleeves. There are also some white marks which appear to be paint and may come out with careful cleaning. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
A nice original coat with some great details.
