An original British Army snow smock dating from the Second World War.

This smock started life as a standard snow smock and was almost certainly made in 1942. The original white colour has been overdyed a teal shade and I have occasionally encountered other smocks which have been dyed in the same manner. It is unclear why this was done although there was a cartographer in the post-war period who had one like this he wore when working on skylines.

The smock is made from a thick cotton and features four patch pockets to the front. These also fasten with chocolate brown coloured vegetable ivory (plastic) buttons as were usually fitted to 1942 production smocks. The hood features a drawstring and the bottom hem drawstring has been removed. There are shadows on each breast pocket which indicates that badges were fitted at some stage. Inside the smock there is clear evidence of where the original label was fitted (picture 6).

These smocks are cut in a loose manner to allow for free movement and clothing to be worn underneath. Based on the measurements I would suggest it would have been labelled as a size No. 2. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 27"
Inside arm - 20"
Outside arm - 20 1/2"
Shoulders - 24 1/2"
Length - 30"

The smock is in good condition with some limited signs of wear and use. There are no serious flaws or damage and overall it is totally wearable. It is a vintage, pre-worn item however so please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that it may have small issues commensurate with age.

A nice original smock in a fantastic colourway.
