An original British Army Officer's Shirt which was made by 'Van Heusen' during the Second World War.

This shirt belonged to 116696 Hugh Charles Bouttell who was an officer in the Royal Engineers during the Second World War. He served with 666 Artisan Works Company during 1940 and spent time with his unit in Iceland during 1941. He was born in 1904 and served throughout the Second World War ending it with the rank of Major.

The shirt is made from a green poplin cotton as was commonly favoured by British Officers during this period. It features a half placket front which was common in the first half of the 20th Century with full button shirts appearing in the 1940s but not gaining popularity in the UK until the following decade. The shirt features a simple barrel cuff and a neckband style collar which is made from the same material as the body of the shirt. This is designed to be worn with a detachable collar but can be worn without.

The original label is present inside the shirt and bears typical period graphics. It bears the title of 'Van Heusen Service Shirt' as well as the maker's name of Harding, Tilton & Hartley Ltd'. A separate section of the label reads 'These shirts must not be sold except to members of H.M. Forces.  As well as this the collar size is stamped to the inside of the neckband and reads '15'.

The shirt will suit someone of around a 38" chest depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

Chest - 23"
Inside arm - 20 1/2"
Outside arm - 23 1/2"
Shoulders - 16 3/4"
Length at back - 35"
Collar - 15"

The shirt is in good condition with some signs of wear and use. There are some marks and limited staining etc but overall the shirt displays nicely and has plenty of wear left in it. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which has some small flaws commensurate with age.

A nice original attributed WW2 officers shirt with a great label which is so typical of the period. Ideal for both the collector and re-enactor alike!
