Original Early WW2 Royal Artillery Coloured Field Service Cap

Original Early WW2 Royal Artillery Coloured Field Service Cap

Code: 54793

An original Royal Artillery Ordinary Ranks coloured field service cap and greeting card which date from the early part of the Second World War.

These caps were popular in the inter-war period and were worn with the No.1 blues uniform as well as with the standard Service Dress uniform on special occasions. They also saw use throughout the Second World War and made a nice alternative headdress when 'walking out' or similar.

This example dates from either the 1930s or the beginning of the Second World War as it is not the economy version produced throughout much of the war. The main body of the cap is made from a thick red coloured wool material whilst the skirt is made from a dark blue coloured version of the same material. A brass Royal Artillery cap badge is fitted to the left side and two small Royal Artillery buttons are fitted to the front. The interior is lined a black coloured cotton and the sweatband is made from an oatmeal coloured wool. It is also large and deep which is typical of early caps and would not be found on an austerity hat.

The hat will fit around a size 7 1/4 and measures 11" along the opening when laid flat.

The cap is in good condition as can be seen in the pictures. There are only limited signs of wear but please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

Included with the cap is a Christmas card which is dated to the 18th of December 1940 which helps to date the cap. It also has 6/10 Medium Regiment Royal Artillery written in ink which could provide scope for further research.

Altogether a good wartime example in great condition.
