An original British made Solar Topee 'Pith' Helmet dating from the early part of the 20th Century.
This helmet is based on the Cawnpore Tent Club Hat which was made popular in the latter part of the 19th Century by King Edward VII. It has a distinctive shape which is notabley different to the standard issue helmets and it features a quilted exterior which is testiment to its quality. A pugree is fitted around the circumference of the helmet and a brass RAF cap badge has been stitched to the front suggesting it was worn no earlier than 1918.
Inside the helmet features a leather liner which has layers of a cottonwool type material which is intended to keep the wearer cool. The original maker's mark is present to the top o the crown and reads 'The "Perfect" Shape London Style' and features typical period graphics.
The helmet will suit around a size 6 3/4 head.
Overall the helmet is in very good condition for its age and it displays very well. There are some limited signs of wear and age so please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage pre-owned item wihch may have small flaws commensurate with age.
A nice original helmet in a rare to find style which would have been very expensive in its day.
