An original early 20th Century mens white cotton evening shirt with winged collar.
This shirt is typical of those made around the turn of the Century and into the 1920s. It is made from a white coloured poplin cotton and is of half placket design which is pulled on over the head. This design was prevalent from the Victorian period through to the 1950s when full button front shirts started to gain popularity. The collar is a winged style which would have been worn with a bow tie and the front features a bib section as well as a tab which allows the shirt to be buttoned onto the trousers.
The shirt is a medium size which will suit around a 40" chest and when laid flat measures -
Chest - 25 1/2"
Inside arm - 21 1/2"
Outside arm - 23 1/4"
Shoulders - 17"
Length at back - 42"
Collar - 16"
It is important to remember that these shirts are cut very wide across the chest to allow them to be pulled on over the head so the true fit will be much smaller than the measurement provided.
The shirt is in sound condition structurally but has various stainings as illustrated in the pictures. It appears to be wearable and displays well enough but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which has some small flaws commensurate with age.
A good original early 20th Century shirt with some great details.
